Local Destinations: Tacloban
Tacloban is the capital of Leyte province, which played a major part in World War II. Leyte was one a center of guerilla operations, and it was on its shores that General Douglas McArthur landed and fulfilled his famous promise: “I shall return.” Today, the McArthur Landing Memorial in Red Beach, Palo, marks the spot where the American liberation troops landed and is often visited by WWII veterans. While in Tacloban, visit the Sto. Nino hurch and the Sto. Nino Shrine and Heritage Museum. You can also travel to the Japanese Memorial Cemetery, the Philippine-Japan Peace Memorial, and the San Juanico bridge-the longest and most beautiful bridge in the country-that connects Leyte to Samar.
