About Batanes:

The province of Batanes is an archipelagic province in the Philippines, part of the Cagayan Valley. It is considered to be the northernmost province in the country and the smallest both in terms of population and land area. Basco, located on Batan Island, is the capital.

Batanes is notable for its breathtaking vistas of nature’s marvels such as vast rolling hills, breathtaking cliffs and beaches, magnificent lighthouses, lovely views of the Pacific Ocean, and the most caring people you’ll ever meet.

The island group is located about 162 kilometers north of the Luzon mainland and approximately 190 kilometers south of Taiwan (Pingtung County), separated from the Babuyan Islands of Cagayan Province by the Balintang Channel, Taiwan, by the Bashi Channel, and Taiwan by the Bashi Channel.

Since 2001, the government has been working on the site’s inscription, creating museums and conservation efforts. Since 2012, the Philippine government has included seven intangible cultural heritage components in its initial inventory. The elements are currently being considered for inclusion in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists.

The population of Batanes in the 2020 census was 18,831 people, with a density of 86 inhabitants per square kilometer or 220 inhabitants per square mile. The Ivatans are the indigenous people of Batanes who share ancient cultural and linguistic roots with the Babuyan on Babuyan Island and Tao people of Orchid Island.
