Good news for Philippine Airlines domestic passengers: Philippine Airlines Free Baggage Allowance Doubled from 10 to 20 kilograms for all local turboprop flights starting this month.

From June 15, 2022, all PAL domestic flights utilizing the De Havilland Dash-8 turboprop aircraft (except flights to and from Basco, Batanes) will provide up to 20 kg of Philippine Airlines Free Baggage Allowance (FBA) – a 100% increase over the previous maximum FBA of 10 kg that had been in force for several years.

More flexibility and convenience for domestic passengers will result from the expanded baggage allowance, as well as a uniform PAL domestic flight standard whether flown with jet or turboprop aircraft.

The maximum FBA of 10kg will, however, be maintained for flights to and from Basco (BSO), owing to particular route operational circumstances that restrict the baggage capacity on these specific flights.

Other fare classes will continue to follow the same baggage rules: Business Value FBA of 30 kg; Business Flex FBA of 35 kg; Economy Saver (flight on either jet or turboprop aircraft) FBA of 10 kg; and no FBA for Economy Supersaver.

Philippine Airlines Turboprop Fleet

Philippine Airlines (PAL) is the flag carrier of the Philippines and operates a fleet of De Havilland Dash 8-400 NG aircraft on its turboprop flights. The airline first placed an order for the aircraft in 2013 and took delivery of the first aircraft in 2014.

As of 2019, PAL has a total of eight Dash 8-400 NG aircraft in its fleet. The aircraft are used on domestic routes within the Philippines, including flights to Mindanao and the Visayas.

The Dash 8-400 NG is a high-performance turboprop aircraft that offers significant advantages over older generations of turboprop aircraft. It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW150 engines, which provide excellent fuel efficiency and low noise levels. The Dash 8-400 NG also features a modern flight deck with state-of-the-art avionics and an advanced passenger cabin with increased legroom and larger windows.

As a result of these features, the Dash 8-400 NG is uniquely suited to operate in the demanding environment of the Philippine archipelago. PAL’s decision to operate the Dash 8-400 NG has been vindicated by the strong performance of the aircraft in revenue service. The airline has reported consistent load factors above 80% on its Dash 8-400 NG flights, and the aircraft has been highly reliable, with an average dispatch reliability of 99.4%.

PAL’s experience with the Dash 8-400 NG has been so positive that the airline has decided to exercise options for an additional four aircraft.
